Abstract: Sengkang Constituency Member of Parliament, Mr Ho Ting-yu, has suggested that the Government should lower the age at which singletons are allowed to buy HDB flats from 35 to 28.

Speaking during the parliamentary debate on the 2023 Budget statement, Mr Ho said the changing demographics had led to more singles in all age groups. Many singles are also suffering from rising rents, so she believes it is time to lower the threshold for buying HDB flats.

Also speaking up for unwed mothers was Ho Ting Ju. She said that unmarried mothers do not receive baby bonuses and do not benefit from other childcare-related announcements.

The government's measures may be counterproductive and seem to be punishing the innocent children of unwed mothers, or encouraging unwed mothers to marry hastily in order to benefit from these measures. This could lead to further problems, such as causing family disputes and even ending in divorce.
