Abstract: According to the Housing Development Board (HDB), nine out of ten elderly people who bought two-bedroom flexible HDB flats opted for shorter leases, with 40-year leases being the most popular.

HDB said in a statement that since November 2015, 46,500 two-bedroom flexible HDB flats have been put up for sale, of which more than 33,000, or about 71 per cent, have gone through the selection process.

As at December last year, 58% of the 33,000-plus two-bedroom flexible HDB flats booked were for older persons aged 55 or above, while the rest were for families or single persons.

Of those who applied, 90% opted for shorter leases.

Of these, 5,280 opted for the 40-year lease, the most popular option among all, followed by the 35-year and 30-year leases.

HDB said that of the 6,728 two-bedroom flexible HDB flats to be launched in non-established HDB areas in 2021 and 2022, about 82% of the flats with 45-year leases were sold for less than $100,000.

Older people who wish to purchase two-bedroom flexible HDB flats can do so through the Home Ownership Bonus.

In March 2020, the Government upgraded and simplified the OALA bonus process, increasing the maximum bonus amount for elderly people from $20,000 to $30,000.

As of December last year, more than 1,500 families have benefited from the Home Ownership Scheme.
