According to the plan, Dawson will undergo comprehensive development, including the construction of 5,500 new public housing units. Facilities such as shops, a comprehensive clinic, a hawker center, and a market will also be integrated into the project.
The entire project will be implemented in two phases, with the first phase scheduled to begin in the second half of next year. The construction of the hawker center and market will be initiated in the first phase, and the second phase will commence after the relocation of the vendors.
In addition to increasing housing units, the comprehensive development project will provide community facilities and services, such as the Queenstown comprehensive clinic. Moreover, to preserve Dawson's history and architectural features, the hexagonal design of the old Commonwealth Avenue hawker center, the barrel-vaulted roofs of the market, and the community ambiance of the old neighborhood center plaza will be integrated into the design of the comprehensive development project.
To enhance residents' quality of life and convenience in commuting, the plan also includes the realignment of certain sections of Commonwealth Avenue to make space for cycling lanes and sidewalks. Furthermore, a linear park will be constructed between the Commonwealth MRT station and the railway corridor, facilitating transportation for residents between the two locations.
The redevelopment plan for Dawson is a comprehensive consideration of historical preservation, community needs, and urban renewal. By retaining some of the old public housing and architectural features while introducing new facilities and improving infrastructure, the plan aims to inject new vibrancy into Dawson and enhance residents' quality of life.
In this project, the government has implemented a new public housing categorization framework to ensure that various income groups have the capability to own their homes, maintaining social diversity and balanced development. This initiative aims to achieve fair housing and sustainable development, allowing every town to maintain a healthy social mix.
